Banks will remain closed in several parts of India on September 5, for Id-E-Milad and Thiruvonam festivals.

Banks in several parts of the country will remain closed on Friday, September 5, this year, due to local festivals like Id-E-Milad (Milad-un-Nabi) and Thiruvonam (Onam). According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) holiday calendar, both public and private banks will observe holidays in specific states and cities. However, since it is not a gazetted holiday everywhere, banks in many regions will operate as usual.
Id-E-Milad commemorates the birthday of Prophet Mohammad, while Thiruvonam marks the final day of the Onam festival, celebrated with grandeur in Kerala and parts of South India. These festivals hold cultural and religious significance and are marked with prayers, processions and family gatherings.
Customers planning to visit banks are advised to check their local branch schedules to confirm if services are available. Even when branches are closed, digital banking options, ATMs, UPI and online transactions will remain fully operational, ensuring financial services are not disrupted.
Banks will remain closed in these cities on September 5 due to local festivals
– North India: Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh), New Delhi (Delhi), Dehradun (Uttarakhand), Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh).
– South India: Bengaluru (Karnataka), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Hyderabad (Telangana), Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Kochi (Kerala) and Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh).
– Northeast India: Imphal (Manipur) and Aizawl (Mizoram).
Other bank holidays to watch out for in September this year
– Sept. 6: Indrajatra / Local Holiday in Gangtok, Jammu, Raipur and Srinagar.
– Sept. 12: Day following Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi in Jaipur, Jammu and Srinagar.
– Sept. 22: Navratra Sthapna in Jaipur.
– Sept. 23: Maharaja Hari Singh Ji’s Birthday in Jaipur.
– Sept. 29: Durga Puja/Maha Saptami in Agartala, Guwahati, Jaipur and Kolkata.
– Sept. 30: Maha Ashtami / Durga Ashtami in Patna, Agartala, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Imphal, Ranchi and Kolkata.
Apart from public holidays, banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month and all Sundays. Customers are advised to plan and confirm branch timings in advance.
